THE MODERN WOLFDEN
Project type
Remodel and New Build
Date
2019/2022
Location
Pioneer Town, CA
The Modern Wolfden was our first built project in California and both an emotional milestone and a defining case study that set the tone for much of our future work in the High Desert. Located in the quiet terrain of Pipes Canyon, this two-structure vacation property combines a remodeled 1950s ranch house (completed in 2019) with a newly constructed Scandinavian-inspired casita (added in 2022), showcasing an architectural language that would later become emblematic of desert design in the region. Many of the features introduced here—floor-to-ceiling glazing, wooden decks with spas and pools, material-driven facades, and seamless indoor-outdoor flow—have since become hallmarks of thoughtful desert living. The layout emphasizes spatial clarity and contrast: the main house offers two bedrooms and expansive communal spaces immersed in landscape views, while the casita introduces two additional bedrooms and a central living core, wrapped in a sculptural, all-wood shingle façade. Together, the structures are unified by restrained detailing, a warm minimalist palette, and generous outdoor living zones—creating a model of balance, place-making, and architectural intent that continues to inform our practice.
